17 has its factors 1 and the number 17 itself. So, 17 is a prime number.

What is the meaning of prime number?

 

Answer: The meaning of prime number is such a number which is perfect by itself. It can not be the product of any two or more whole numbers. The only factors of a prime number are 1 and the number itself.

 

For example, 23 can not be the product of any two or more whole numbers. The only factors of 23 are 1 and the number 23 itself, i.e. 23 = 1 × 23 and no more. So, 23 is a prime number.
